There are many ways to earn money online, and one of those methods is to work with VIPKid.
VIPKid is a teaching platform that connects North American English teachers with young Chinese English students. The idea of remote learning is not new, but the number of teaching platforms has been growing in the last decade.
VipKid is one of many online English teaching sites, and it is somewhat limited in terms of who can expect to be accepted as a teacher. This adds credibility to the platform for its customers, but VipKid may not be the best option, if it is a teacher, and does not accept rejection.
The platform is quite specific about who it will employ, and has a reputation for rejecting many applicants. Of course, this is only part of the search for a job in any area, but it is worth thinking before placing your hopes on the online English teaching job for VipKid.
Who is VipKid?
VipKid is a company that connects Americans and Canadians who want to teach English and Chinese children who want to learn more English at a relatively young age. There is a great deal of research that shows that exposure to another language at an early age makes it much easier to learn over time, and VipKid seems to be taking advantage of that advantage.
On the website, ESL teachers who have been approved and trained teach children in China through video calls. Most of their students are between 4 and 12 years old, and the vast majority are from middle class families in China. It is a business similar to other online ESL companies such as Qkids, Dada, ABC and Cambly.
The company was created in 2013 by Cindy Mi and Jessie Chen. It has grown and attracted major investors, including world-famous basketball player Kobe Bryant and other venture capital investors such as Learn Capital, Tencent, Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partners and many others.
At the end of 2018, VIPKid had more than 600,000 students and more than 70,000 teachers in 35 countries.
VipKid seems to be a reliable company and has appeared on some of the largest media platforms in the world. Forbes placed it at the top of the list of the "top 100 companies that offer remote jobs" of the company.
There is no doubt that VipKid is a solid English teaching site, but it may or may not be the right one for your lifestyle and teaching.
Enter the door
Of course, to teach with VipKid, you must meet some basic requirements. The company is quite strict regarding its policies, so if you do not meet all the requirements, you may not want to try VipKid.
Anyone who wants to work with VipKid must have at least a bachelor's degree that can be in any field. A degree in education will not affect your chances of being hired, but you can have any four-year degree as an applicant. You must also speak North American English as your mother tongue, and it is good to have experience in teaching or leadership.
VipKid will also want you to commit to a six month contract, which can be renewed once you complete it successfully. Other than that, you will need to have a desktop or laptop computer, and the company will not allow you to use a smartphone or tablet at first.
After being hired, you can teach from your iPad, but you cannot complete the interview with one. Your system must run on Windows 7 or higher, or MAC OS 10.8x. You must also have an Intel Core i3 or higher, at least 4 GB of RAM, the latest version of Flash, and you will need a wired DSL Internet connection, at least 20 Mbps.
All these technological requirements will be quite standard in any online English teaching service, so make sure you have the right equipment for the job. In addition, your computer needs to have a camera, and you need good headphones with a microphone.
If you meet the description described above and want to teach English online, VipKid could be the perfect platform for you!
How to apply
As long as it meets the requirements that VipKid has created, the application process is quite simple. It's not going to be a super fast way to earn money, but once it's set up, you should be able to do it monthly.
To become a VipKid teacher, the first step is to send your CV to VipKid or complete the application form on your website so that you can evaluate the basic requirements and teaching experience. You must also attach supporting documents, such as a university degree, TESL certificate.
If the company is interested in learning more about you, it will schedule a 30-minute interview with you, so you can show your English teaching skills to VipKid recruiters. During this process, recruiters will ask you to provide a short demonstration class. This will determine your base payment rate for the lesson.
After passing that step, you will have to practice a long-term teaching class with other VipKid teachers. Assuming that goes well, you will receive an email that consists of your score and comments about your strengths and weaknesses in each section.
And once you finish signing a contract with VipKid, you must complete "Teacher Training" as a Teacher Practice. Teacher training with VipKid are YouTube videos that provide complete information on teaching methods, what to do and what not to do, and general materials.
Once finished, they can give you a questionnaire to make sure you understand all the materials that have been presented to you. After that, you can start booking classes and earn money.
What differentiates VipKid from other platforms?
Let's be honest, there are many totally legitimate teaching sites on the Internet, and some of them pay more than VipKid (more in payment in a minute). For all the hoops that VipKid requires from its future teachers, what does the company offer in return?
One of the biggest advantages of VipKid is the amount of flexibility it offers its teachers. You can work with VipKid part-time or full-time, although it encourages teachers to take on a full-time workload.
Many teachers enjoy working for VipKid, according to reports published online. Work could also be fun part-time for someone who enjoys working with children and doesn't want to get up early in the morning. Since class schedules are based on the Beijing schedule, which is a 13-hour time difference from the United States, the workday begins at approximately 6 p.m. in North America.
In addition to being able to work at night, it has a comfortable working environment like your home and without traveling in the rain or snow. You can work from almost anywhere you want, as long as you have a stable and high-speed Internet connection.
Flexible and easy to deal with
VipKid is a flexible job. You can make your schedule, such as choosing what hours are right for you, perfect as a spare / second / summer job. Especially if you have young children or want to earn more money after finishing your daily work.
One of the things that really frees up your time with VipKid is the fact that there is no class planning or qualification. Vipkid has created an online educational program for the English class that provides individual attention and only focuses on practicing English in a supportive environment.
How about the payment?
The payment in VipKid is in line with the rest of the online teaching industry. Experienced teachers can earn a little more on other platforms, but VipKid is a great option for almost any teacher.
Payment rates on VipKid vary, but a teacher posted the following information about your real experience with the platform:
The base salary is usually around $ 16-18 / hour ($ 8-9 per 25-minute lesson) depending on your experience, in addition to that come the incentives:
Incentive just for showing up and being ready to teach $ 1 / class
An incentive to finish 30-44 classes in 1 month $ 0.50 / class
An incentive to finish 45 or more classes in 1 month $ 1 / class
Occasionally, additional incentives to open slots during busy periods (we recently had an incentive program that earned $ 24 in 1 week!)
Those incentives add up quickly and if you teach 45 classes per month with a salary of $ 9 / class, that means:
45x $ 9 = $ 405 base salary
45x $ 1 = $ 45 only showing incentive
45x $ 1 = $ 45 incentive of more than 45 classes
Total $ 495 for teaching only 22.5 hours = $ 22 / hour!
Getting on board with VipKid
As mentioned earlier, there is an application process with VipKid, and many potential (and qualified) teachers are rejected. If you are selected to work with the company, you will be an independent contractor and, in essence, you will have a teaching business with only one client (VipKid).
Therefore, the company does not provide any health insurance or other benefits and you are responsible for your taxes. Peak hours can be at inconvenient times, since their job is to teach children around the world in real time, their schedule can become complex. The positive side is the lack of a formal work environment and zero daily trips.
As VipKid is basically a broker, customer demand will determine the amount of work on the platform. Clients will also have de facto control over the times when work is available, and there is little they can do to create consistent work hours.
You may want to consider having more than one teaching job if you want to stay as busy as possible.
The company asks you to send a schedule of your availability every month, and once you send it, they expect you to fulfill your commitment. If you have a personal emergency, you can be fired if it lasts more than a few days.
Are there any other options out there?
The online educational space is booming. If you are reading this review and realize that you may not qualify to teach on VipKid, do not worry. There are many accredited English teaching platforms online, and you probably meet the requirements of one of them!
DaDa is another English teaching platform that specializes in connecting English speakers with Chinese students. Unlike VipKid, DaDa will accept teachers who are not from North America, but will still need a bachelor's degree to be considered for the program.
In addition to being a native English speaker and having a bachelor's degree, DaDa only requires you to dedicate a monthly time for teaching. Payment in DaDa starts at $ 15 USD per hour and increases to $ 25 USD per hour, which is higher than the highest published payment rate on VipKid.
The platform has no real drawbacks, although some online English teaching sites will pay more than $ 25 USD per hour to highly qualified teachers. If you are just starting in the world of teaching English online, or want to have a flexible concert, it is worth investigating DaDa.
Some teachers simply want to work with adults. iTutorGroup will help you teach adult ESL students in Taiwan, as well as younger Taiwanese students if you wish.
In addition to being a native English speaker, you must have a bachelor's degree and a TESOL certificate to work at iTutorGroup. One thing that can turn off potential teachers is that the down payment rate is $ 6 USD per hour, but that increases to $ 30 USD per hour for more experienced teachers.
Like VipKid, it will work in an Asian time zone, which means that your nights will probably be dedicated to work. You will also be asked to take at least 10 peak hours per week, and students will leave comments on their performance.
PalFish is one of the most flexible English teaching platforms in the world, and will allow almost any type of English accent on your site. In addition to being super complacent about the type of English you can speak, it also gives your teachers a lot of flexibility when programming.
Paying at PalFish starts at $ 10 USD per hour and goes up to $ 30 USD for first level teachers. It allows students of all ages to study on the platform and is not limited to students from a single geographic area. You will have to have a bachelor's degree, but in addition to that, no additional accreditation is required.
If you want to do part-time teaching work, or are looking to spend some extra time left by another teaching platform, PalFish is a great way to keep busy. The payment rate on the platform is good for industry standards, and it offers you a lot of personal freedom.
VipKid is worth an application if it fits your profile
VipKid is a great platform for new and experienced teachers, as long as it meets your requirements. If you are just getting started and think that a rejection may be difficult to take, it may not be the best platform to start.
The company also has a strict cancellation policy, which can be difficult to manage for new teachers who are not used to being their own bosses.
For more experienced teachers, VipKid is a good place to take advantage of their skills and education to earn money. Some teachers have turned it into their full-time job, and it is entirely possible to obtain a decent income with the company.
Some teachers have had communication problems, as parents (clients) may leave a comment or review after completing a lesson, which is difficult to understand. Because many of them do not speak English, the comment and review must be translated and can be confusing.
In addition, the company itself will not necessarily be composed of native English speakers. This means that VipKid comments or messages may seem rude, which can be irritating to new teachers who have not worked before outside their culture.

Despite the fact that many online English teaching platforms have created requirements that can be frustrating if you are a native English speaker with a bachelor's degree, you should be able to find teaching opportunities.
VipKid is a good example of how most online English teaching companies work and how the application process works. One thing to consider is the teaching material, which VipKid includes for use by its teachers.
The fact that VipKid includes all teaching aids and does not require any type of qualification makes it a good platform for teachers who do not want to have to do extra work when they do not spend time with their students.
In general, VipKid is a good option for North American English speakers who have a bachelor's degree, if they wish to continue working in teaching English online. It has a good reputation for creating opportunities for both students and teachers and for paying its contractors on time.
