Since MyFoxChicago: An error in the new Illinois automatic voter registration system led to the possibility of 545 non-US citizens registering to vote, 16 of whom voted, state officials publicly acknowledged this week.
The office of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, which oversees driver's licenses, said the data of 574 people who identified themselves as non-citizens were wrongly sent to the election officials who will register to vote. Election officials confirmed on Tuesday that 545 of them were finally registered.
"It was a computer error" White spokesman Dave Druker said Tuesday. "We moved to correct it and contacted the people involved."
